Lemon Tetra

Glassily transparent, the lemon tetra (hyphessobrycon
pulchripinnis) could appear to be just a sunbeam flashing

plants and driftwood. Another member of the large characin clan,
the lemon tetra has a fairly elongated body like its smaller
relative the neon tetra and like neons and other characins, the
lemon tetra does best if kept in small schools of six to eight

One of the most distinguishing features of the lemon tetra is
their large eyes. The upper part of the lemon tetra’s eye is
brilliant red, which is a sharp contrast to the yellow pastels
it displays in its body colors. Actually, though, the lemon
tetra is quite colorful on close inspection. Body coloring is a
delicate pale yellow, flanks are silver, and the leading edge of
the anal fin is shiny-bright-yellow and sharply divided from the
other rays, which are black. In the male, the rest of the anal
fin is broad and fringed in black, a characteristic that is
missing in the plumper female. As many male characins do, the
male lemon tetras also have tiny hooks on their anal fins. Both

In order to have true lifelong weight loss you have to commit to trading your old habits in for a new, healthier lifestyle. This has more to do with readiness for change than a desire to shed pounds- there is a big difference. The good news is, as you start on the journey to change these old habits you will be amazed how much better you feel physically, psychologically, and emotionally. This is the place where the people who have experienced long term weight loss have entered and want to stay. When you are truly committed to changing your lifestyle you will achieve lifelong weight loss and so much more!

Ask yourself a few questions. Are you ready to make permanent dietary changes for you and your family? Are you ready to start exercising regularly? Are you ready to defend your new lifestyle changes to those who are undermining your efforts? Don’t fret if you aren’t completely ready to dive into change. This is the stage to keep up the learning process by reading articles and gathering information. You will know when the time is right and that will be when you answer an unequivocal “Yes!” to the above questions.

2. Developing a vision. When I ask people what their goals are for a weight loss program the answer is always, “to lose weight of course”, or “to lose x amount of pounds”. It is crucial to have another more, heart-felt reason to lose weight other than losing pounds and appearance. This is because when times are tough, and they will be during any change process, you will need a heart-felt or internal reason to lose the weight to keep you motivated. Losing weight for appearance is ok but it is an external reason and will not help to keep you motivated for long.

In the past my clients have chosen things like, being able to play with their kids, running a marathon, backpacking trip they have longed to go on for years, and a big motivator is often a health condition. I call this your vision. It is imperative to take a few minutes to learn what your vision is. What is important to you that you will be able to achieve with weight loss? Write this vision down and plaster it everywhere so you always see your end goal and it will always help to motivate you further when times are tough.

3. Self Talk - is yours negative or positive? Unfortunately it’s true that we are our own worst critics and like hearing any critic it often leads us to failure because we believe the critic is right. Furthermore, we start to believe things are true that are absolutely not true. For instance, if a child is told they are a klutz from an early age they will likely always think they are a klutz. We believe what we are told repeatedly.

What do you tell yourself? One common statement I hear a lot of these days is, “I can’t eat carbohydrates because once I start I can’t stop”. This is a belief that you have set up from constant defeating self-talk and once you believe it then no doubt you will act it out. However, there is no scientific reason why a person would not be able to stop eating after having a bite of carbohydrates. Your belief makes it your reality. So whenever you hear yourself say I can’t do something or any other self-defeating talk. Stop yourself and change the sentence to a positive. For example, I realize that carbs have been a challenge for me in the past but I can eat a portion and put the rest away for later. Keep working on your own positive reinforcement by being gentler with yourself and tell yourself all that you CAN do.

4. Be prepared for change. All weight loss programs require us to change a habit yet no one warns us about the process of change. The first thing to know is that the beginning of change is difficult and uncomfortable. This is because it forces us to get off autopilot and focus on our new behaviors. Luckily it takes about 21 days to make a new habit and the uncomfortable part goes away and our new habits become autopilot.

For example: Imagine you get your dream job and it requires that you have to get up at 5:30am. Yikes! You normally get up at about 7:30 am. So, what do you think will happen that first morning when the alarm goes off at 5:30? You aren’t going to feel so great and your body is going to beg you to get back into your warm bed! This will go on for about 2-3 weeks until your body stops fighting you and realizes this is the new habit. The same thing will happen to you when you change eating and exercise habits. Just expect a little resistance and keep going! Your new healthy changes will eventually become your new habit. You just have to keep at it.

Acid reflux treatment in pregnancy can be a little tricky.
Balancing cures, diet and exercise with what’s good for both
avoiding reflux and sticking to doctor’s orders for the baby’s
sake can be tough.

Let’s face it, sleeping can be difficult enough during pregnancy
and the third trimester’s the worst. Unfortunately, this is
generally when acid reflux tends to rear its ugly head.

That’s right. That awful burning feeling in the back of the
throat, discomfort that feels like fire and a general sick
feeling that makes sleeping almost impossible.

To deal with reflux in pregnancy, it’s a good idea to understand
first why it is so common. There are a lot of reasons acid
reflux and pregnancy go hand-in-hand along with the typical
heartburn many experience right out of the gate.

First off, pregnancy hormones can simply wreak havoc on the body
and then there’s the simple fact that the wonder of life that is
your baby can, and does, press on organs in ways a first-time
mother could never imagine. Sleeping can be hard enough without
acid reflux, but it’s an unfortunate side effect that can hamper
the last few weeks.

So, what’s a mom-to-be to do?

The first thing is to relax. While acid reflux is a nightmare,
keep in mind that unless it’s a medical condition that was
present before the pregnancy, it will likely go away as soon as
the baby is born. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

When trying to treat reflux in pregnancy, remember pregnant
women cannot or should not take a lot of the medications that
are suggested for acid reflux under normal conditions. Thus,
some pre-emptive strikes to avoid the condition are in order.

Here are some things that can help a pregnant woman avoid
horrible bouts of acid reflux and things to do to relieve the
symptoms if they start:

How to avoid an attack:

* Stay away from foods that can cause reflux. This means just
say no to chocolate! Sorry. It also means steering clear of
acidic foods such as juices and fruits, tomatoes, vinegar and
fried and fatty foods.

* Since you’re pregnant and should already be staying clear of
caffeine this hopefully won’t be an issue, but if you’ve been
having a few sodas or coffees a day, cut that out of your diet
right away.

*Limit food intake. Don’t overeat.

*Don’t eat right before bed.

*Drink tons of water. This is not only good for helping stave
off an acid reflux attack, it’s also good for you and the baby.

*Elevate yourself when you sleep. Acid reflux involves a
“backflow” of stomach contents into the esophagus, stop it
before it starts by careful placement of pillows.

Even the best-laid plans don’t always work for a woman nearing
term. If acid reflux strikes, check with your doctor about what
you can take. Some find that pregnancy-friendly Tums help,

Don’t get discouraged and just do your best to relax and let the
symptoms pass. Remember, acid reflux in pregnancy tends to go

Get ten ways to deal with change and hurt
Let’s face it, change in your life is inevitable; sometimes it is easy, sometimes it is not. Some of it is gentle, and some of up is an upheaval that leaves you dazed and confused. If you have been hurt by someone or something, how you deal with it and react to it determines how long you will be in pain from it.

So here are my 10 best suggestions:

1. Remember that change is growth. If we never experienced change, even painful change, we would be stuck in the same place forever.

2. If you are not in control of the change, fighting against it is just going to hurt more. If you have lost a job, or a friend, for instance, and there is nothing that you can do about it, hanging on is just going to make the pain last longer than necessary.

3. Forgive yourself. Many times we spend a lot of time beating ourselves up over mistakes that we have made, or even just perceived that we made, and it isn’t going to help. Examine your part in what happened and forgive yourself.

4. Be gentle with yourself for awhile. You have been hurt. Give yourself a break. Do something nice for yourself. Just don’t make this stage last too long, or you are in danger of becoming depressed.

5. Forgive the other person. If you have been hurt or betrayed by someone, then you are going to have to forgive them in order to move on. This does not mean that you have to forget what they did, or that you have to contact them about it. Forgiving is for you, not for them. It cuts the ties and allows you to move on.

6. Write down how you feel and burn the paper. It helps tremendously to get all of the anger and hurt out so you can release them. One of the best ways to do this is to write down exactly how you feel, and then burn the paper. Be just as nasty as you feel, no one is going to see it but you anyway.

7. Don’t mope around. You need to get up and out and look for something new. You might not feel ready to make a new friend, or for a new relationship, but at least don’t sit around the house too long feeling sorry for yourself.

8. Get support from others. Allow friends or family members to be supportive of you. Ask for help. Allowing others to be nice to you and tell you that you are still a fine person helps.

9. Realize that you are in control of this process. It is very true that this pain is going to last just as long as you decide that it will. If you are constantly “picking” at it, then it is going to take a lot longer to heal. You Mom was right about that!

10. Never, ever give up. Even if you have been let down time and time again by people you thought were your friends, keep trying. Keep making new friends! It may be that you need some help with your self esteem, and that is affecting your judgment when it comes to the people that you are choosing as friends. If this is the case, the get help for this. But never allow anyone to make you feel bitter or to make you isolate yourself. If you do that, you have allowed this to take away your personal power. Only you can get it back!
