For less than three thousand dollars you can have an international e-business that will look professional and will allow you to drop ship products direct to you customers without leaving your house. Wow, what an opportunity with lots of potential. Yes there is a lot of potential, but when you launch your website it is like a rain drop hitting the Atlantic Ocean; nobody knows you exist. Most newbie e-tailers think simply paying $50 to a search engine submit service will generate 1,000 of web page hits within days. While this used to be true 10 years ago, it will do nothing more than register your e-business somewhere at the bottom of the search engines listings. It is purported google.com and some other search engines may give new website boosted search ranking for a few weeks, but this can hardly sustain hits to your site. Still it’s a nice gesture in the brutal world of e-business.

The e-business entrepreneur is now scratching his head wondering why he is getting less than 10 unique visits to his website a day. So, he invests a few hundred dollars into pay- per-click advertising on Google or Yahoo. The more competitive your industry the more expensive it is to buy a high ranking pay-per-click advertisement. For example, “aviation headsets” can cost as much as $5 a click, and you have only driven one person to your e-business with the hopes of a conversion to a sale. The entrepreneur is now starting to feel how strong the invisible e-business marketing barrier is while he spends somewhere between $30 to $100 a day for small text ad’s on a leading search engine. This strategy will drive traffic to your website quickly, but for a hefty premium. This is a waste of money and best suited for a pulse marketing strategy because most e-business customers have ZERO loyalty; they shop for the cheapest price.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of climbing the search rankings naturally without having to engage in pay-per-click advertising, but it is an intensely complicated process and the paradigms can change from one week to the next. SEO can cost as little as a one time $500 fee to $10,000 a month. The risk involved for the entrepreneur is that a $10,000 investment may increase website unique hit from 10 hits a day to 1000 hits a day, but in a month the search engine could make changes to their algorithm and the weighting factors for your website may change, crashing your ranking from the top 10 to top 500. If you’re not in that magical first page search engine listing your are not going to see significant hit increases.

Without capital to invest in marketing your website will be a liability, so before you pour your creative talent into an e-business get advice from a knowledgeable business advisor, or successful e-business owner.

I’m often asked just how the process works. It starts with talking with my client
about their lifestyle needs. For instance, does the “man/woman of the house” sit in
a certain chair in the family room and does it need to be lined-up with the TV or
need a good reading light by it for using a laptop? Do they have young children or
rambunctious teen-agers so no breakable decorations on the coffee tables? (This is
my secret for why the finished rooms live as good as they look… I have seen family
members from early grade school children to unenthusiastic spouses come home
and wander around the newly re-designed rooms commenting on how they like it!)

Next I look at the furnishings with an eye to arranging them into a room with some
real style. While I’m at it I will “shop” the home to see what I can find and put to
better use in other ways. Often times the initial shopping list gets shorter as
inspiration strikes, and we find new use for existing items. Just today I was re-
designing a living/dining room combination and was able to place a console piece
backed up to the sofa so it could also be used for additional serving service in the
dining room. The client was thrilled not only with the new look but the added
functionality of her room when entertaining without buying another piece of
furniture. Other times I’ve found a chair tucked into a walk-in closet and a trunk,
artwork, and area rugs stored in garages.

Then I direct an assistant to empty the room of everything but the largest pieces so I
can begin with a clean slate to re-design a beautiful professionally decorated room.
This includes not only arranging the furniture but hanging art and pictures, placing
lamps and plants, accessorizing tables (tablescapes), mantles, curio cabinets, china
hutches and bookcases. We complete the room down to the last detail the client
gives me to work with. Having been a florist, I often arrange silk or use fresh flowers
from the yard to add that extra style to the room.

If a client needs additional items, I then will write them a shopping list at the end for
finishing touches. If they want help shopping, I can help them with that as well. I
have one client who hates to shop because she finds it hard to visualize the items in
her home. She has been living there several years feeling like it felt unfinished and
not very “homey”. We’ve made several shopping runs now and after the last one, she
sent me an e-mail and said “The house looks awesome.” Some times you just need
a little help to get your home where you would love it to be!

They can make all the difference within a few hours. The most common response I
hear when a client walks into see their newly re-designed room for the first time is:
“I can’t believe it. I would never have thought of doing it this way but I LOVE it!” So

My Company’s Leadership Sucks!

Maybe it’s the season or just a more buoyant job market;
but lately I’m sure involved in a lot more discussions
about leadership.

I’m receiving more requests for help defining the key
characteristics which make a great leader; and I’m hearing
a lot of negative stuff from clients about their bosses.

Most leaders die with their mouths open:

I recently read an article in Fast Company magazine which
reflected on the issue of leadership. In it, they quote
Ronald Heifetz, the founder of Harvard’s Center for Public
Leadership, who made the above comment back in 1999. He
followed it up by saying that, “leaders must know how to
listen - and the art of listening is more subtle than most
people think it is. But first and just as important,
leaders must want to listen.”

You’d think this is simply basic stuff, right? Like what we
learned in Management 101. I doubt there’s any exec in
business today who wouldn’t say they ‘know’ this already.
But in my experience, in many cases, leaders don’t seem to
think it applies to them.

And yet, I’m continually told by executives and
professionals that they don’t feel ‘heard’ enough by their
superiors. And here’s the really interesting thing about it
- I hear this frustration cited by people at every level
within organizations! < What this means that managers at
every level, are busy looking 'up' the organization chart
for someone to listen to them - but they're not giving
their own managers and staff 'below' them the same
benefits!

So we have the situation, in many companies, where the
managers go around telling those who report to them what to
do & how to do it but rarely ask those same people for
their input. How dumb is that?

Our North American companies are pretty inefficient:

OK - this is a random poll: Please raise your arm if you
believe that your company is at least 90% efficient.

Based upon what I hear from clients, there aren’t many arms
raised out there, I’d guess. In fact, most executives tell
me that their own organizations are actually inefficient.
Many are concerned that their employer is getting less
competitive on a global scale. Some worry about cutbacks or
reduced investment spending which may result.

At the same time, they’ll often tell me that they
personally are bored, unchallenged, stale, and losing
interest. So, let’s review: Inefficient businesses - no one
is listeing to those closer to the real action - and stale
managers who are worried about global competitiveness. Is
this a coincidence? Not likely.

We can fix this situation. And it’s not that hard. Remind
yourself once in a while about that lesson of Management
101 and become a better leader by becoming a better
listener. Simply start asking - and here I mean showing
that you really want to hear your team members’ ideas about
making your department or organization more efficient. Show
clearly that you are on a new mission and want to make
‘listening’ a priority. When your direct reports start to
believe that you are serious - watch out. I guarantee that
you’ll start to hear new ideas which will kick-start your
organization’s success. With that will come renewed
enthusiasm for the job. And the cycle of success will build
from there.

You don’t need to die with your mouth open.

Tips:

1. Give your team credit for having the same basic needs
and expectations as you have yourself.

2. Shut up once in a while.

3. Ask your subordinates how they’d deal with a problem or
situation.

4. Get enthusiastic for the game again. There was a reason

you took this job.

Do You Have the Characteristics of an Article Writer?

In order to answer the question I’ve just asked in the title, I decided to interview myself. (Now there’s a stretch). After all, I’ve spent a lot of time reading the instructions of the people who profess to make a lot of money writing and I’ve spent a lot of money on the written word about writing the word so if I put it all together I should be an expert. Right?

So I figured, I’ll talk to an expert, someone who has spent a lot of time and money buying the writing of people like you and me. Me

To get my opinion, I made a list of characteristics - things that I feel are important in a writer - and gave myself the task of rating them from 1 (most important) to 7 (least important). Before we go further, I’d like to ask you to perform the same exercise. Just number the following characteristics, the definition will have to your own interpretation, based on your life experiences. Just go ahead and put your number in the space to the right of each characteristic.

Love of writing

Professionalism

Quality of writing

Self-Assuredness

Self-motivation

Talent

Writing Style

Now to the business at hand.

Let’s take the list in order and see where it takes us, shall we?

“Love of writing”- let’s face it writing is not like being a great artist; even the mediocre among us can learn to write and might even be interesting.

In fact, that’s where talent may be detrimental, if you stop to think about it. Those with writing gifts figure that their ability should some how make writing easy for them - and when they find out, this is not fiction writing, its some plodding writing with much research, rewriting and trying to decide what the facts are. Which is all part of writing a good article, they become disillusioned. Suddenly they realize that something they enjoy as play is really going to be work.

You can be a writer without talent. But without the desire, every word you write will come hard and leaden. You won’t last or turn out articles that will be read.

The desire to write, the “Love of Writing”, I felt was number 4. There are those that think I have forgotten something and of course when you think about it they maybe right, does anyone care if you like what you are doing? Fact is a lot of people have jobs they don’t care for but most manage to do a reasonable job despite not “loving it”.

“Professionalism” - I’ve defined “professionalism” as “knowing what you are writing is going to be one hell of a good read”. It means that you have done your research, presented them in a professional manner and are ready to stand behind your article. You have presented an article that is of the proper length and of a quality that is above reproach. I rated Professionalism number 1. What did you think?

“Quality of Writing” - Quality of writing is what your readers will see of you. Recognizing this, you should realize that if your writings were good your readers would know it. That is what will bring them back for more. If your article doesn’t impress your reader, don’t spend time wondering what’s wrong with the reader. Ninety nine times out of one hundred it is your writing, and only by facing that will get you to the point where people will buy into your point of view. I rated Quality of writing number 2.

“Self-assuredness” - When we come right down to it, self-assuredness - as well as the other qualities we discuss, are subject to interpretation of the reader. No one can tell if you’re self-assured simply by reading your work, we can however determine that you seem to be. Of course there is no question that self-assured people inspire confidence, in their readers. Perception is paramount and if your reader sees you as someone that will do the right thing, you’ve got the job. Of course we all can be fooled but remember “Quality of Writing” will out. I rated “Self-Assuredness” number 7.

“Self motivation” - Now this is a biggie, because if you have ever set down to write there are many things that will get in the way, getting a cup of coffee, sharpening your pencil, etc. These are all of the things that get in the way of your “motivation”. Of course we are talking about enthusiasm mixed with the desire to achieve. Self-motivation is the one key characteristic that can make or break you as a writer. You may think that this kind of enthusiasm is merely naiveté in disguise, but I wouldn’t mind having some more of it myself. I rated “Self-motivation” number 6 but maybe it should have been higher.

“Talent” - In my opinion talent isn’t something you achieve, you can’t get it through training or study or even osmosis. You get it naturally - you are born with it. So by default you don’t need Talent to become a good article writer because a person with average verbal skills can be trained to write acceptable articles.

Maybe you find that statement disturbing, I know I certainly do but it is true, you can learn to be a good writer; of course if you lack talent you must work much harder and differently. I rated “Talent” number 5.

“Writing Style” - When writers talk about “Style” its apparent that they view it as something as unique as a finger print, a way of writing that will put their own inimitable stamp on their work. That’s not it, actually. Style is simply how you string your words together. It doesn’t have to be unique: infact, when it is, it can get in the way: unique gets tiresome.

I really don’t think style is anything you can intentionally develop - not anymore than you can wish wrinkles on yourself. Nor is it important that your work be encompassed by any such personalizing description. What is important that your writing is a form and logic and propels your reader along and makes the reading just about irresistible. When it reaches the point that the paper you have just typed on tells you what’s needed instead of the other way around, you have developed style. I rated “Style” number 3.

In conclusion, to answer the question before us, we must analysis the facts we have gathered. Since I interviewed myself for this piece, these conclusions will have to be mine and I am sure you will come up with your own conclusions. I hope we have given you something to think about.

I have concluded that you must have professionalism at least as defined by Webster’s Dictionary. (Remembering we are not talking fiction.) If you don’t know what you are talking about your reader will know. If that is the case why write it down. I further concluded that you must develop a quality and style to your writing which gives you the confidence to continue. You must love to write or at least feel some joy in putting words on paper or you won’t succeed. Then of course it’s nice if you have talent and self-motivation, but I don’t feel that the lack of these will hinder you from success if you really want to write.

Are you making money hand over fist with your website? If you are then you don’t need to bother reading this article because it is not for you. If you are like most of us your website sales are slow and unpredictable and you need to think of new ways to make money online without taking more time and effort. All of your time should be dedicated to producing your product, right? Well, here are just a few ways to make a little bit or a lot of money online without any effort.

1. Affiliates
Sign up to become an affiliate for other businesses that are on the net. I only sign up with the companies that I honestly would recommend to anyone. All that you have to do is refer your customers to these sites. Once one of my referrals makes a purchase, I receive a small payment. With some of the affiliate programs the fee is quite large.

2. Google Ads
I was not too sure about this one but I signed up and I am now convinced. The first week that I had Google ads on my website I made $.18 and the next week I made $6.45! Wow! Big boost. If I keep this up, I just may be able to pay for my web host by the end of the month!

3. Google Search
Works close to the same way as the ads. People use your search tool, make a purchase and then you are compensated.

4. Amazon
Another great tool that will trickle in a few dollars here and there, all for 10 minutes of your time putting a little code into your website and Amazon does the rest.

5. Selling Ad Space
You could sell ad space if you have a site that has high traffic.

6. Selling Subscriptions to Your Newsletter
If you have a newsletter that has high demand information, you could charge for your newsletter.

7. Selling Ad Space in Your Newsletter
Sell ad space in in your newsletter. Same drill as with ad space on your website. Just put a box on your newsletter with a note inside it that says “Your Banner Could Go Here” Then have a page that tells how many subscriber that you have, how often your newsletter goes out and what type of content it usually contains plus the price per ad.

8. Selling E-Books
Do you know something about your craft or hobby that you know people would pay to learn as well? Then sell it in an e-book. What a great way to make a little extra money. You take the time to write a good quality e-book then just fill the orders. You could even set it up so that once the e-book order has been processed and paid for, it goes out automatically using an auto responder without you even having to lift a finger, except to go to the bank to collect your money.

9. Consulting - Offer your services
Do you sell wedding supplies and know all of the best suppliers around? Do a little research and offer your services as a wedding coordinator. Offer your assistance to the people that want to plan their own wedding, but need a little bit of help.

Remember, you wont get rich with just one of these programs, but you just may make a tidy little sum every month with a combination of all of them.
